regulations. All Central recyclable packaging displays the Recyclable where

the curb in your blue or clear bag
Fluid Milk
1. What does 'partly skimmed milk' mean?
Partly skimmed milk is milk that has had some of the milk fat physically
removed from the product. Central 2%, 1% and 0.5% milk are examples of partly
skimmed milk products.
2. What is Homogenization?
Homogenization means that milk fat globules are physically broken
up by specialized equipment into very small particles. This process keeps the
fat evenly distributed throughout the milk and prevents it from floating up
to the top of the container. All Central milk products are homogenized during
processing.
3. What is the PH Level of milk?
Milk has a PH level between 6.4 and 6.7.
4. What is pasteurization and does it affect the nutrient composition
of milk?
Pasteurization is a process that involves heating milk at temperatures
that are high enough to kill harmful bacteria that cause diseases and does not
involve the use of any additives whatsoever. Pasteurization not only makes milk
safe to drink, it also increases the time it can be kept before it spoils. The
nutrient loss that is associated with pasteurization is so small that it is
considered insignificant.
Chocolate Milk
1. Is Chocolate Milk good for you?
YES! One cup of Central Chocolate Milk is an excellent source of calcium
and vitamin D as well as the other essential nutrients found in white milk.
One cup of Central 1% Chocolate Plus milk provides 40% of your recommended daily
intake of calcium!
Calcium Related
1. Is calcium important?
Yes, calcium not only helps to strengthen your bones and control blood
pressure, but virtually every cell in your body (including those in your heart,
nerves, and muscles) relies on calcium to function properly. If your body is
not receiving enough calcium, your blood will "rob" the calcium from your bones
to help it maintain the levels that it needs for other areas to function properly.
2. Does the calcium found in fruits and vegetables provide as much
nutritional benefit to my body as that found in dairy products?
In order for your body to reap the benefits of calcium in your diet
it must be able to absorb and use it. Generally, the body is not able to adequately
absorb the small amount of calcium found in fruits and vegetables. This is because
most of these types of foods naturally contain substances like oxalate, phytate
and fibre that bind calcium and interfere with its absorption. Vitamin D helps
the body to absorb calcium - and milk is high in vitamin D.
3. What foods (besides dairy products) will give me the calcium I need?
By removing milk and dairy products from your diet, it will be difficult
for you to meet your body's daily calcium requirements. To obtain the same amount
of calcium as is found in one serving (250mL) of milk you would have to eat
more than 7 1/2 cups of spinach, 4 cups of broccoli, 11 1/2 cups of red kidney
beans, 32 cups of soy beverage or 12 slices of whole wheat bread.
4. How much calcium does one serving of Central milk have?
One serving of Central milk, which is defined as 250mL (or 1 cup),
contains 30% of your recommended intake of calcium.
5. How much calcium does one serving of Central Calcium Plus milk products
have?
One Serving of Central Calcium Added milk, which is defined as 250mL
(1 cup), contains 30% of your recommended intake of calcium.
6. Why are Central' Calcium Plus milk products labelled as 'milk beverages'?
Regulations surrounding the declaration of milk products are very
specific, therefore when you add something to milk it can no longer be labelled
as 'milk'. In all of the Central Calcium Plus products we add extra calcium,
which means that we must now label the product as a milk beverage.
Nutrition
1. Where can I find nutritional information on my favourite Central
products?
Nutritional information for all Central Products is available either
directly on the package in an easy to read, standardized (and bilingual) Nutrition
Facts Table, or you can access this information directly from our website in
the product lines section.
Lactose Intolerance
1. Can I still enjoy Central fluid milk products if I am lactose intolerant?
YES! Did you know that Central Dairy is the manufacturer and distributor
of the Lacteeze brand of products for Atlantic Canada? For more information
on Lacteeze please visit the Product section of our website.
2. What makes lactose-free milk products different from regular milk
products?
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts
of lactose, which is the predominant sugar in milk. In lactose free products,
the lactose is converted into two simple sugars that the body of someone with
lactose intolerance can easily digest. Thus, they can still enjoy the same milk
product without the discomfort.
Central Flavoured Milk
1. What is the difference between Central Flavoured Milk products and
Farmers Milk Shakes?
Our flavoured milk products are a 0.5% M.F. Calcium Enriched Partly
Skimmed Milk product which means that they are not only a low fat product, but
that they also provide your body with 50% of its recommended daily intake of
calcium. Delicious AND nutritious!
UHT Milk
1: What is UHT milk and why doesn't it need to be refrigerated until
opened?
UHT refers to in part the high heat (ultra high temperature) at which a UHT
product is heated. This process combined with packaging in an air-tight sterile
package ensures that product can be stored without refrigeration for long periods
of time (or until the package is opened).
